As you know, there are a number of changes you should expect when you’re pregnant. For example, you probably know that your exercising and eating habits will change. However, did you know that your oral health will also change?

For instance, you may have heard that you shouldn’t visit your dentist during pregnancy. However, this isn’t entirely true. In fact, it’s important to remember that you should visit your dentist all throughout your pregnancy. While you shouldn’t have an X-ray while you’re pregnant, we will be able to clean your teeth. In fact, we might recommend more frequent cleanings. We recommend scheduling an appointment with us as soon as you learn you’re pregnant.

When you’re pregnant, you’ll actually be much more vulnerable to gum disease because your hormones will change. Specifically, pregnant women have elevated progesterone. Progesterone will inflame blood vessels in your gums, which can lead to gum disease.
Finally, please note that your diet is extremely important for pregnant women. If you don’t follow a healthy diet, you may not get the calcium or vitamins you may need. If you don’t get enough calcium, your child’s teeth may not develop properly.
