Porcelain dental crowns are sometimes used to restore a compromised tooth that also appears in your smile. They are made from a special dental grade porcelain-ceramic material that is intended to look and behave just like natural tooth enamel.

Unfortunately, there are still instances where something can happen to chip or fracture a dental crown. This is more likely to occur if you grind your teeth on a nightly basis, or you have a bad habit of using your teeth to bite off string or open packaging. Contact sports athletes who forgo the use of a protective mouth guard are also at increased risk of suffering a fractured dental crown.

Even if the damaged dental crown doesn’t cause you any immediate distress, you should still have it examined and treated by one of our experienced dentists at Double Take Dental. Without timely, professional attention the fractured dental crown could experience significant complications.

You should never attempt to brush or clean a damaged crown. If an accident has left blood or debris in your mouth, you can gently rinse them away using lukewarm saltwater. Our team of specialists will handle any other necessary cleaning measures.

If the abutment was somehow damaged your dentist might need to perform a root canal to restore the sufficient structure. Once this is done we can start the process of fitting you for a new dental crown.
